For homeowners Neil and Matt, preserving the character of their Art Deco home was non-negotiable. They loved the period charm and architectural detail of the original house, but their vision was to create a home that also supported modern living and entertaining.

Working closely with the couple, Summit Renovations Senior Designer Deb Pearcey led a considered renovation that celebrated the home’s heritage while introducing a generous contemporary extension to the rear.

Respecting the Past

Neil and Matt have a deep appreciation for Art Deco design, and the renovation sought to honour this wherever possible. Rather than competing with the home’s original architecture, the design approach was to complement and enhance it.

A particular highlight was incorporating the couple’s passion for leadlight and stained-glass windows. Neil and Matt had already sourced several remarkable pieces before construction began, and the renovation carefully integrated them into the design through custom openings that showcase these unique features.

A Master Suite Designed for Comfort

Located close to a busy road, the home presented an acoustic challenge. Neil is particularly sensitive to outside noise, so creating a quiet retreat became a key part of the brief.

To address this, the design introduced a spacious master suite at the rear of the home, positioned away from the street. This location not only helps mitigate traffic noise but also provides a peaceful connection to the garden, creating a private sanctuary within the home.

The Heart of the Home

The kitchen was central to the couple’s vision. Both Neil and Matt love to cook and entertain, so the rear extension was designed to create an open, welcoming space where friends and family could gather.
