Project Overview

This charming 1940s family home had been a beloved place for over 20 years, but as time passed, its original layout and aging features no longer met the family’s evolving needs. The tired terracotta roof needed replacing, and with two children nearly grown, they wanted a fresh home that supported their lifestyle without giving up the mature gardens or the neighbourhood they loved.

Led by Senior Designer, Charlie Hadddad, the goal was clear: reimagine the home’s layout to improve flow and functionality while preserving its original character. The result is a seamless blend of heritage charm and modern design — a bright, open, and welcoming space perfect for family life and entertaining.

What We Did

Summit Renovations brought this vision to life with thoughtful design and quality craftsmanship:

  • Complete roof replacement: Removed the original terracotta tiled roof, replacing it with a durable, low-maintenance Colorbond roof.
  • Reworked floor plan: Walls were repositioned, a bathroom relocated, and hallways removed to enhance flow. The son’s bedroom was enlarged, and key areas including the kitchen, scullery, laundry, and bathrooms were demolished and rebuilt with fresh layouts.
  • Enhanced natural light: New Velux skylights and bi-fold doors flood the centre of the home with daylight, dramatically brightening what was once a very dark area.
  • Preserved character features: Original jarrah floorboards and the lounge fireplace were retained, complemented by a new gas wood-look heater installed within the existing hearth and mantle. The iconic front French doors were preserved to maintain authentic charm.
  • Upgraded amenities: The kitchen now features custom two-tone oak and pale grey-green cabinetry, marble-look porcelain benchtops and splashbacks, and a dedicated gluten-free bench and oven for their coeliac daughter.

The Renovation Journey

Completed over two stages with the family living on-site, the renovation was a carefully managed process:

Stage 1: The roof was removed and replaced with Colorbond, while major living areas including the kitchen, dining, laundry, and one bathroom were fully reconstructed. “Having regular contact with the site manager Grant really helped us feel involved and reassured.”

Stage 2: Focused on finishing two bathrooms (one newly relocated) and expanding the son’s bedroom to better suit his needs.

Client Experience

Charlie’s use of 3D modelling played a key role in helping the family visualise the new layout before construction.

The kitchen has become the heart of the home, more than twice its original size and perfectly suited for entertaining.

Natural light pours in through skylights and bi-fold doors, transforming the once dark centre of the house into a bright, welcoming space. The bathrooms are both highly functional and stylish, reflecting the family’s minimalist, neutral design preferences while balancing heritage elements like jarrah floors and the original fireplace.
