Case Study: Character Home, Cottesloe

Captivating Cottesloe

Summit's Design Consultant Charlie met with clients Natalie and Justin to do a pre-purchase inspection on the home that they were considering, going through the house room by room as well as looking at the overall site in regards to orientation so designing for the climate could also be considered.

They then purchased the home with a view to extending and renovating it into a family home.

The home is a 1930s art deco character home so the brief was to extend and modernise the home whilst keeping the character and art deco elements.

The front rooms of the home had original jarrah floorboards which had never been polished and were hidden under carpet and details like the doors, cornices, skirting boards were restored and replicated to the new areas.

“We wanted the extension to flow from the front of the original home with a new, open living and kitchen space, making the most of the morning and northern light aspect,” said Natalie and Justin.

The bathrooms, kitchen, scullery and laundry were designed for functionality as well as being contemporary in design whilst maintaining classic clean lines.

It was important to be a functional family home which would continue to work as the family grew.

To cap it off, the existing concrete tiles were removed as well as the guttering and new Colorbond roofing and gutters were installed to give crisp clean lines to the roof. With rear lane access, off street parking was maximised by inclusion of a double garage/store.

Natalie and Justine were first-time home owners and renovators, so had never undertaken a project of this scale before.

“From first contact and throughout the Design phase, our Consultant Charlie was exceptional. He brought a depth of knowledge of older homes, personal experiences, and the ability to listen very closely to our vision and design brief.

"Charlie’s experience and knowledge, for us, who had never renovated before, assisted us greatly through the design/selection phase.” said Natalie and Justin.

During the design process, virtual 3D walk through models were created to visualise what the finished product would be like and computer generated sun studies carried out to ensure the best possible outcome for designing for the Perth climate.

Irina was Natalie and Justin’s Project Coordinator, who helped them through the pre-construction phase and the selection process for their new home.

“Irina was exceptional, professional, and communicates very well – answering all our many questions. We always felt assured things were progressing and welcomed the advice on key decisions.” said Natalie and Justin.

“Our daughter was born at the commencement of the demolition/construction phase, so we were very grateful that all selections are made prior to works commencing.

"This meant when our daughter arrived and the project commenced we had already taken all the decisions and Summit could progress the execution of the work without delay.” They added.

The construction phase of the project went off without a hitch and the overall build time exceeded the client’s expectations.

“Adam was our Project Supervisor and brought great experience, knowledge, and energy to the managing the build process.

"He provided timely feedback and communicated updates or where there were decisions to be made. Always available, on site regularly overseeing the build and was always happy to talk through questions/ideas/provide answers,” Natalie and Justin said.

The finished home is a stunning modern home that features many of the original art-deco elements that made Natalie and Justin fall in love with the home in the first place.

It is zoned so the master bed and ensuite and sitting room are at the front of the home and the minor bedrooms, bathroom and living areas are to the rear.
