Step up your home office space with these tips and tricks
Our working lives have changed dramatically in a short amount of time. Safe to say our office set ups are quite different now than they were a few weeks ago.
If you are currently working from home, you will have swapped your stand-up desk for a seat at the dining table, your office coffee for mediocre coffee from your Nepresso and daily chats with your co-workers with awkwardly angled Zoom meetings (to hide the pile of laundry to your left - you're here to work, not to clean).
But it doesn't have to be this way, there are easy ways you can tweak your office space to up your work from home game.
- Find your space: The couch and the kitchen aren't ideal places to work from, so have a look at your home and see if you can 'borrow' space from anywhere else - the hallway, a landing, spare bedroom, space under the stairs - any low traffic area with some empty space.
- Lighten-up: Natural lighting is ideal (not just for your eyes, but your comfort and mood). If you can, place your desk near a window or at least in a well-lit room. If this isn't possible, set up a good quality lamp nearby.
- De-clutter: Chances are you will be working in a smaller space, so make sure you have a clean space to work with. Wires/cables can be easily put out of the way with some cable ties. A desk with a drawer or somewhere to store extra pens/note books etc... is perfect to keep your main working area clear.
- Make it yours: This isn't your normal office, so the space should reflect this. Hang some of your favourite artwork/photos nearby, move your dog's bed next to your desk so you have an office buddy. If plants are your thing, a small desk plant is ideal (or install a beautiful hanging plant above your desk to give your area a more tropical vibe). Put on your favourite playlist and go!
